Jesus, Son of God by Chris Tomlin and Christy Nockels

Today’s strong worship song is Jesus, Son of God by Chris Tomlin and Christy Nockels. The song just came out March 13, 2012 just in time for Easter! At Lamb of God Lutheran we will be singing it for our Easter Sunrise service or Easter Festival service. This song has all of the elements of a strong worship song. The lyrics are Christocentric (Christ-centered) and didactic, but also lead worshipers to strongly praise the Son of God. Jesus deserves our highest praise for His ultimate and perfect sacrifice to set us free from our sin.

Biblical references include John 6:38-41, Matthew 8:20, Luke 9:58, Matthew 27:29, Mark 15:17, John 19: 2-5, 1 John 4:19, 1 John 4:10, John 1:29, and Hebrews 12:2, 1 John 5:12, 1 John 5:20, Mark 1:1, Matthew 26:63-64, Matthew 27:54, Luke 1:35, John 20:31, and Romans 1:4.

Jesus, Son of God

You came down from heavens throne
this earth you formed was not your home.
Love like this the world had never known.

A crown of thorns to mock your name
forgiveness fell upon your face.
Love like this the world had never known

On the altar of your praise let there be no higher name
Jesus Son of God
You laid down your perfect life.
You are the sacrifice Jesus Son of God
You are Jesus Son of God

You took our sin You bore our shame
You rose to life You defeated the grave
Love like this the world had never known

You took our sin You bore our shame
You rose to life You defeated the grave
Love like this the world had never known

On the altar of your praise let there be no higher name
Jesus Son of God You laid down your perfect life
you are the sacrifice
Jesus Son of God
You are Jesus Son of God

Be lifted higher than all you’ve overcome
Your name be louder than any other song
There is no power that can come against your love
The cross was enough the cross was enough!
The cross was enough the cross was enough!

What a Savior – Laura Story

Today’s strong worship song is What a Savior by Laura Story which came out in 2009. The lyrics are very strong and incorporate all of the elements that I look for in a strong contemporary song. It is a song of praise to Jesus, our hero who by his mercy saved us from the depravity of our sin through His atoning sacrifice. He, the Beginning and the End (God) took our sin and shame on his shoulders!  Hallelujah, what a Savior. I also appreciate Laura Story’s God-given faith shining through her songs.

Scriptural references include Psalm 43:4, 1 John 2:2, John 14:6, Psalms 23, John 10, Revelation 22:13, Revelation 21:6, Philippians 2:9, and  John 15:15

What a Savior

Atoning Sacrifice
Keeper of this life
Hallelujah You are savior
Beginning and the end
Forgiver of my sin
By Your mercy You have saved us

Jesus You are stronger
More than any other
Hallelujah what a savior

Jesus You are higher
My soul’s deepest desire
Hallelujah what a savior

You are the shepherd king
You lead us by still waters
Hallelujah You are savior

You are my only hope
Your kindness is my friend
In Your presence You restore us

You are the way the truth and the life
You are my joy and salvation
Stood in my place taking my shame
Upon your shoulder

Jesus You are stronger
More than any other
Hallelujah what a savior

Jesus You are higher
My soul’s deepest desire
Hallelujah what a savior

Hero by Abandon

Today’s strong worship song is Hero by the group Abandon which appeared on their first album Searchlights back in 2009.

I like the song because it beautifully portraits Jesus as our Hero which He is. Part of what makes Jesus a great hero was His true humility that brought Him to the cross to pay for our sins. For many “humility” and “hero” are contradictory. When it comes to Jesus, however, they are complimentary. True humility makes a great hero into an even greater hero. There is no greater Hero than Jesus Christ. I also like the song because it emphasizes the fact that Jesus is the Savior of the world. His death paid for the sins of all people of all time.

We will be using this song in our Good Friday service at Lamb of God Lutheran in a few weeks. We will use is as a reflection song sung by a soloist.

Scripture references include Romans 10:11-13, Matthew 4:19-20, John 14:6, 1 John 4:14, John 6:17-19, Luke 8:24, Mark 8:22-24,Matthew 15:37-39, Romans 5:8, Matthew 28:5-6, John 3:16, 1 John 2:2, and 1 Timothy 1:9-10.

Abandon – Hero

He walked the dirty streets famous for nothing
He said, “Come follow me” and they came
A face like all the rest, but something was different
The Son of God would lead the way

And soon they all would say
There He goes, a hero, a savior to the world
Here He stands with scars in His hands
With love He gave His life so we could be free
The savior of the world

He spoke with clarity, walked across the sea
A single word would calm the storm
His touch could heal the sick, but He was called a hypocrite
Laid behind the stone, his death was shortly mourned
He left the curtain torn

There He goes, a hero, a savior to the world
Here He stands with scars in His hands
With love He gave His life so we could be free
The savior of the world

He chose to take the cross, shed tears for the lost
The broken and the needy, forgiving those who were and will be
The angel made it clear, he told them, “Have no fear
He’s not here, He’s not here”

There He goes, a hero, a savior to the world
Here He stands with scars in His hands
With love He gave His life so we could be free

The savior of the world
(The savior of the world)

The savior of the world
(The savior of the world)

The savior of the world
