Jesus Friend of Sinners by Mark Hall and Matthew West of Casting Crowns

Today’s strong worship song is Jesus Friend of Sinners by Mark Hall and Matthew West of Casting Crowns. This song was released in 2011 on their Come to the Well album. The strong words of the song point to our sin of hypocritically judging others. The song writers use the first person to admit that they themselves have done this, which I think is part of the strength of the song. The song calls us to repentance and points us as well to Jesus the friend of sinners. Another strength of the song are the many Biblical references of Jesus extending grace to sinners.

Scriptural references include Matthew 11:19, Luke 7?34, John 8:1-12, Matthew 7:1-5, Luke 6:41-42, Luke 18:9-14, Luke 5:12-16, Luke 5:27-31, Luke 17:11-17, Luke 17:12-19.

“Jesus, Friend Of Sinners”

Jesus, friend of sinners, we have strayed so far away

We cut down people in your name but the sword was never ours to swing
Jesus, friend of sinners, the truth’s become so hard to see
The world is on their way to You but they’re tripping over me
Always looking around but never looking up I’m so double minded
A plank eyed saint with dirty hands and a heart divided
Oh Jesus, friend of sinners
Open our eyes to the world at the end of our pointing fingers
Let our hearts be led by mercy
Help us reach with open hearts and open doors
Oh Jesus, friend of sinners, break our hearts for what breaks yours

Yeah…

Jesus, friend of sinners, the one who’s writing in the sand
Made the righteous turn away and the stones fall from their hands
Help us to remember we are all the least of these
Let the memory of Your mercy bring Your people to their knees
Nobody knows what we’re for only what we’re against when we judge the wounded
What if we put down our signs crossed over the lines and loved like You did

Oh Jesus, friend of sinners
Open our eyes to world at the end of our pointing fingers
Let our hearts be led by mercy
Help us reach with open hearts and open doors
Oh Jesus, friend of sinners, break our hearts for what breaks yours

You love every lost cause; you reach for the outcast
For the leper and the lame; they’re the reason that You came
Lord I was that lost cause and I was the outcast
But you died for sinners just like me, a grateful leper at Your feet

‘Cause You are good, You are good and Your love endures forever
You are good, You are good and Your love endures forever
You are good, You are good and Your love endures forever
You are good, You are good and Your love endures forever

Oh Jesus, friend of sinners
Open our eyes to world at the end of our pointing fingers
Let our hearts be led by mercy
Help us reach with open hearts and open doors
Oh Jesus, friend of sinners, break our hearts for what breaks Yours

And I was the lost cause and I was the outcast
Yeah…
You died for sinners just like me, a grateful leper at Your feet

So true “our sin of hypocritically judging others” What a Great Savior we have to forgive us… Jesus and his grace is something to be forever thankful for.

    Great blog site!
Love that you are encouraging others to think critically no theologically about the content of current worship music.
I find many songs speak powerful truths that bring me into a better understanding of God, His ways, and His character.
The good ones bring me in His presence as I reflect on His grace and goodness towards me and others.

I would be very honored if you would check out some of my songs on YouTube and let me know what you think.
I lead worship for a small church in West TN and would like to get these recorded.
I am interested in getting these out for the church but humbly admit that I and my church may have a higher opinion than others of these:)

Would you give them an honest listen and provide some feedback?

    • Hi Scott,

I am so sorry that this has taken me so long to get back to you. I have had a lot of extra things on my plate and the blog was temporary placed on the back burner. I love your songs! Of the songs you sent me links to I like “O God Help Me” the best. I will listen through your songs more and provide more specific feedback.

Keep on praising Christ with your musical gifts!

      Sincerely
      Pastor Scott
