Jesus friend

Whom Shall I Fear (God of Angel Armies) by Chris Tomlin and Ed Cash

Today’s Strong Worship Song is Whom Shall I Fear also known as God Of Angel Armies by Chris Tomlin and Ed Cash. This song was written as the album Burning Lights was being produced and wasn’t part of the original selection for the album. Chris Tomlin felt so strongly about this song that the album was delayed until the song could be added.  It was well worth the wait.

I like the lyrics of this song because they read like many of the Psalms and vividly remind us of the strength and power of our Savior God in the midst of the battles and challenges of life. National tragedies like the Sandy Hook shooting remind us of the deadly forces of evil in this world which seem to be growing stronger each day. As we begin a new year of uncertainty in an evil world every believer needs reminders of God’s power, protection, and promises. This song delivers them.

There is no direct mention of Jesus name in the song. Jesus however is the Light that shines in the darkness, the faithful One, the One for whom angels sing and defend, the One who forever reigns, our friend who defends us, the One who is with us always, our Deliverer, and the only who can save us.

Scripture references include Psalm 50:15, Psalm 2,  Psalm 18:2, Psalm 27, Psalm 40:17, Psalm 70:5, Psalm 140:7, Psalm 144:2, Psalm 110, 2 King 6:8-23, Psalm 143, Isaiah 54:17, Psalm 148, Deuteronomy 31:8, Luke 1:33, Matthew 2:21-23, Luke 20:43, John 1:9, Acts 2:35, Hebrews 1:13, Ephesians 6:10-18, and Colossians 1:17.

God of Angel Armies

You hear me when I call
You are my morning song
Though darkness fills the night
It cannot hide the light
Whom shall I fear

Verse 2:
You crush the enemy
Underneath my feet
You are my Sword and Shield
Though trouble lingers still
Whom shall I fear

Chorus:
I know Who goes before me
I know Who stands behind
The God of angel armies
Is always on my side
The One who reigns forever
He is a Friend of mine
The God of angel armies
Is always by my side

Verse 3:
My strength is in Your name
For You alone can save
You will deliver me
Yours is the victory

Chorus:
I know Who goes before me
I know Who stands behind
The God of angel armies
Is always on my side
The One who reigns forever
He is a Friend of mine
The God of angel armies
Is always by my side
Whom shall I fear
Whom shall I fear

Bridge:
And nothing formed against me shall stand
You hold the whole world in Your hands
I’m holding onto Your promises
You are faithful
You are faithful
You are faithful

Chorus:
I know Who goes before me
I know Who stands behind
The God of angel armies
Is always on my side
The One who reigns forever
He is a Friend of mine
The God of angel armies
Is always by my side

Chorus:
I know Who goes before me
I know Who stands behind
The God of angel armies
Is always on my side
The One who reigns forever
He is a Friend of mine
The God of angel armies
Is always by my side
Outro:
The God of angel armies is always by my side

Jesus Friend of Sinners by Mark Hall and Matthew West of Casting Crowns

Today’s strong worship song is Jesus Friend of Sinners by Mark Hall and Matthew West of Casting Crowns. This song was released in 2011 on their Come to the Well album. The strong words of the song point to our sin of hypocritically judging others. The song writers use the first person to admit that they themselves have done this, which I think is part of the strength of the song. The song calls us to repentance and points us as well to Jesus the friend of sinners. Another strength of the song are the many Biblical references of Jesus extending grace to sinners.

Scriptural references include Matthew 11:19, Luke 7?34, John 8:1-12, Matthew 7:1-5, Luke 6:41-42, Luke 18:9-14, Luke 5:12-16, Luke 5:27-31, Luke 17:11-17, Luke 17:12-19.

“Jesus, Friend Of Sinners”

Jesus, friend of sinners, we have strayed so far away

We cut down people in your name but the sword was never ours to swing
Jesus, friend of sinners, the truth’s become so hard to see
The world is on their way to You but they’re tripping over me
Always looking around but never looking up I’m so double minded
A plank eyed saint with dirty hands and a heart divided
Oh Jesus, friend of sinners
Open our eyes to the world at the end of our pointing fingers
Let our hearts be led by mercy
Help us reach with open hearts and open doors
Oh Jesus, friend of sinners, break our hearts for what breaks yours

Yeah…

Jesus, friend of sinners, the one who’s writing in the sand
Made the righteous turn away and the stones fall from their hands
Help us to remember we are all the least of these
Let the memory of Your mercy bring Your people to their knees
Nobody knows what we’re for only what we’re against when we judge the wounded
What if we put down our signs crossed over the lines and loved like You did

Oh Jesus, friend of sinners
Open our eyes to world at the end of our pointing fingers
Let our hearts be led by mercy
Help us reach with open hearts and open doors
Oh Jesus, friend of sinners, break our hearts for what breaks yours

You love every lost cause; you reach for the outcast
For the leper and the lame; they’re the reason that You came
Lord I was that lost cause and I was the outcast
But you died for sinners just like me, a grateful leper at Your feet

‘Cause You are good, You are good and Your love endures forever
You are good, You are good and Your love endures forever
You are good, You are good and Your love endures forever
You are good, You are good and Your love endures forever

Oh Jesus, friend of sinners
Open our eyes to world at the end of our pointing fingers
Let our hearts be led by mercy
Help us reach with open hearts and open doors
Oh Jesus, friend of sinners, break our hearts for what breaks Yours

And I was the lost cause and I was the outcast
Yeah…
You died for sinners just like me, a grateful leper at Your feet

What a Savior – Laura Story

Today’s strong worship song is What a Savior by Laura Story which came out in 2009. The lyrics are very strong and incorporate all of the elements that I look for in a strong contemporary song. It is a song of praise to Jesus, our hero who by his mercy saved us from the depravity of our sin through His atoning sacrifice. He, the Beginning and the End (God) took our sin and shame on his shoulders!  Hallelujah, what a Savior. I also appreciate Laura Story’s God-given faith shining through her songs.

Scriptural references include Psalm 43:4, 1 John 2:2, John 14:6, Psalms 23, John 10, Revelation 22:13, Revelation 21:6, Philippians 2:9, and  John 15:15

What a Savior

Atoning Sacrifice
Keeper of this life
Hallelujah You are savior
Beginning and the end
Forgiver of my sin
By Your mercy You have saved us

Jesus You are stronger
More than any other
Hallelujah what a savior

Jesus You are higher
My soul’s deepest desire
Hallelujah what a savior

You are the shepherd king
You lead us by still waters
Hallelujah You are savior

You are my only hope
Your kindness is my friend
In Your presence You restore us

You are the way the truth and the life
You are my joy and salvation
Stood in my place taking my shame
Upon your shoulder

Jesus You are stronger
More than any other
Hallelujah what a savior

Jesus You are higher
My soul’s deepest desire
Hallelujah what a savior
