Made Alive by Citizens

Today’s Strong Worship Song is Made Alive by Citizens which was released in March of 2013.  I like the song for multiple reasons one of which is that it has an 80’s style which is what I grew up with in high school and college. By far, though what makes Make Alive strong are the lyrics. Made Alive presents bold  truth without apology.  We were by nature objects of wrath, dead in sin, alone and hopeless. God reached us in His love and kindness and made us alive in Christ.  God’s love and grace are amazing. Strong contrasts are in the lyrics as well — light vs darkness, death vs life, wrath vs mercy, etc. Simply put, the lyrics acknowledge all that God has done to make us alive.

Scripture references include Colossians 2:13, Ephesians 2:1, Romans 6:11, Romans 5:19, Romans 3:20-21, Ephesians 2:8-9, John 8:12, John 9:5, and  John 3:19.

Made Alive

I once was dead in sin
Alone and hopeless.
A child of wrath I walked
Condemned in darkness.

But Your mercy brought new life
And in Your love and kindness,
Raised me up with Christ
And made me righteous.

You have bought me back
With the riches of,
Your amazing grace
And relentless love.
I’m made alive forever,
With You, life forever
By Your grace I’m saved
(By Your grace I’m saved)

Lord, You are the light,
That broke the darkness.
You satisfy my soul,
When I am heartless.

If ever I forget
My true identity,
Show me who I am,
And help me to believe.

You have bought me back
With the riches of,
Your amazing grace
And relentless love.
I’m made alive forever,
With You, life forever
By Your grace I’m saved
(By Your grace I’m saved)

My sin has been erased,
I’ll never be the same.
My sin has been erased,
I’ll never be the same.

You have bought me back
With the riches of,
Your amazing grace
And relentless love.
I’m made alive forever,
With You, life forever
By Your grace I’m saved

You have bought me back
With the riches of,
Your amazing grace
And relentless love.
I’m made alive forever,
With You, life forever
By Your grace I’m saved
(By your grace I’m saved)

Overcome by Jeremy Camp (words and music by Jon Egan)

Today’s strong worship song is Overcome sung by Jeremy Camp with words and music by Jon Egan. This song has alternate titles including We Will Overcome, Savior, Worthy of Honor and Glory, and Seated Above.

Jon Egan wrote this song  in 2007 in response to a horrible incident at his Colorado church in which a mad gunman shot six innocent church goers killing two of them in their church parking lot.  Jeremy Camp, a personal friend of Jon, featured this song on his Worship Project album that came out August of 2010. The lyrics are very strong on several levels. First and foremost they are Christocentric or Christ-centered. They emphasize the amazing fact that the God’s perfect, sinless son suffered and died to pay for the sins of all mankind. Not only did Jesus suffer and die, but He overcame death on the  third day and now lives in full majesty and authority.

We are called to give testimony to His name and with that will come trouble at times.  Jesus put it this way “In this world you will have trouble. But take heart! I have overcome the world.” The song lyrics which are based on this verse encourage us to take heart and to overcome whatever trouble through Christ. I am amazed at how many great worship songs have come out of tragedy.

Scripture references include: John 16:33, Colossians 3:1, Luke 22:20, 1 Peter 2:21, Matthew 26:28, Ephesians 1:20, Revelation 12:11, 1 Corinthians 1:6, 2 Thessalonians 1:10, 3 John 1:12, Luke 10:19, 1 John 2:14, 1 John 4:4, 1 John 5:4-5, and Revelation 2:7.

Overcome

Seated above, enthroned in the Father’s love
Destined to die, poured out for all mankind
God’s only son perfect and spotless one
He never sinned, but suffered as if He did

All authority, every victory is Yours
All authority, every victory is Yours

CHORUS:
Savior, worthy of honor and glory, worthy of all our praise, You overcame

Jesus, awesome in power forever, awesome and great is Your name, You overcame

Power in hand speaking the Father’s plan
You’re sending us out, light in this broken land

We will overcome by the blood of the Lamb
And the word of our testimony, everyone overcome

CHORUS:

Savior, worthy of honor and glory, worthy of all our praise, You overcame

Jesus, awesome in power forever, awesome and great is Your name, You overcame

Redemption Song by Joel Kanitz

Today’s strong worship song is Redemption Song written by Joel Kanitz a musician at CrossWalk Lutheran in Phoenix, AZ. Redemption Song otherwise known as The Savior’s Love was written exclusively for worship at CrossWalk and is one of three original songs so far by the CrossWalk Band under the leadership of Jonathan Favorite.  The text is strong and comforting because it points us to the source of our hope and renewal as believers; namely our Savior’s love, mercy, and selfless action. Musically the song is fresh, clean and pleasing to the ear.

Bible references include Isaiah 62:12, Luke 1:68, Galatians 3:13, 1 Peter 1:18, Matthew 22:14, Ephesians 1:11, Colossians 3:12, James 2:5, 1 Peter 1:1-2, 1 Peter 2:9, Ephesians 2:4-5, 1 John 4:8, 1 John 4:10, and John 9:25.

Redemption Song

I have been redeemed
I am far from pure and holy
But God has chosen me
I have been restored
By the Father’s love and mercy
I am not the same anymore

[Chorus]

Oh, the Savior’s love
The Savior’s love
The Savior’s love has brought me through
The Savior’s love
The Savior’s love
The Savior’s love has made me new

[Verse 2]

I have been made clean
In a fountain of forgiveness
Where my sins become unseen
I have been renewed
By Jesus’ selfless actions
There is hope for me, there is hope for you

[Chorus 2]

Oh, the Savior’s love
The Savior’s love
The Savior’s love has brought me through

Aaron Shust – Never Been A Greater Love

Today’s Strong Worship Song is Aaron Shust’s “Never Been a Greater Love” which is found on his new album “This Is What We Believe” which was released in August of 2011. As far as strong, Biblical lyrics go, they don’t get much stronger this. Aaron Shust touches on several Biblical truths including the total depravity of man, the amazing grace of God, the pursuing love of Christ, redemption, and atonement. In addition to the strong lyrics, I enjoy the musicality of this song.

Scripture references include John 9:25, Romans 8:1, Luke 19:10, Matthew 12:21, Romans 5:1-2, 1 Timothy 1:1, Hebrews 2:10, John 15:13, and 2 Corinthians 9:15.

Never Been a Greater Love

There is nothing in this world
That means as much to me
Than the fact that You came looking
In my hour of desperate need
I was lost but then You found me
I was blind but now i see
Who You are
Who You are

Giver of hope when all is hopeless
When i was picking up the scraps
Lord, You never stop pursuing
Never give up when dreams collapse
We have been touched by grace amazing
You gave it all to buy us back
It’s who You are
Who You are

You are the author of salvation
Perfecter of our faith
The God of restoration
Our sins have been erased
There is now no more condemnation
You’ve covered us with grace
There has never been a greater love
There has never been a greater love

Never a gift has been so lovely
Never a love has been so pure
I can’t imagine ever finding
Somebody else who loves us more
Even though we cannot repay You
We’ll give our lives in the pursuit
Of who You are
Who You are

Jesus, You’re so wonderful
Oh how wonderful
You are
