Because He Lives by Matt Maher

Today’s Strong Worship Song is Because He Lives by Matt Maher which was released as part of his Saints and Sinners album which was recently released.  The lyrics are creedal in nature in that they state what the author believes. The lyrics focus on Jesus, His redemption, His resurrection, and our identity in Him. Matt accurately depicts the depravity of man. We were all spiritually dead in our sin and shame before God brought us to spiritual life through the gospel. I love this song and it will be one we feature at our Easter service this year.

Scriptural references include Ephesians 2:1, Romans 6:11, Colossians 2:13, Hebrews 2:14, Acts 20:28, Romans 3:25, Romans 5:9, Ephesians 1:7, Colossians 1:20, Hebrews 9:12, 1 Corinthians 15, and 1 John 1:7.

“Because He Lives (Amen)”

I believe in the Son
I believe in the risen One
I believe I overcome
By the power of His blood

Amen, Amen
I’m alive, I’m alive
Because He lives
Amen, Amen
Let my song join the one that never ends
Because He lives

I was dead in the grave
I was covered in sin and shame
I heard mercy call my name
He rolled the stone away

Amen, Amen
I’m alive, I’m alive
Because He lives
Amen, Amen
Let my song join the one that never ends

Because He lives
I can face tomorrow
Because He lives
Every fear is gone
I know He holds my life my future in His hands

Amen, Amen
I’m alive, I’m alive
Because He lives
Amen, Amen
Let my song join the one that never ends

Amen, Amen
I’m alive, I’m alive
Because He lives
Amen, Amen
Let my song join the one that never ends
Because He lives
Because He lives

We Believe by the Newsboys

Today’s Strong Worship Son is We Believe by the Newsboys. The Newsboys have been around for a long time in the CCM world and have always been a favorite of mine. They were the first to make the song  In Christ Alone popular back in 2003. We Believe hits the mark on what strong worship songs are all about.  The lyrics are a creed as the title suggests and give a clear testimony to the Trinity, the crucifixion, the resurrection, Christ’s Return, and the gift of spiritual rebirth. Scriptural references include Matthew 28:19-20, 1 Corinthians 15, Matthew 16;18, Matthew 25:57, and Mark 15:28,

We Believe

We believe in God the Father
We believe in Jesus Christ
We believe in the Holy Spirit
And He’s given us new life
We believe in the crucifixion
We believe that He conquered death
We believe in the resurrection
And He’s comin’ back again, we believe

So, let our faith be more than anthems
Greater than the songs we sing
And in our weakness and temptations
We believe, we believe!

We believe in God the Father!
We believe in Jesus Christ!
We believe in the Holy Spirit!
And He’s given us new life!
We believe in the crucifixion!
We believe that He conquered death!
We believe in the resurrection!
And He’s comin’ back again!

Let the lost be found and the dead be raised!
In the here and now, let love invade!
Let the church live love our God will save
We believe, we believe!
And the gates of hell will not prevail!
For the power of God, has torn the veil!
Now we know Your love will never fail!
We believe, we believe!

We believe in God the Father
We believe in Jesus Christ
We believe in the Holy Spirit
And He’s given us new life!
We believe in the crucifixion!
We believe that He conquered death!
We believe in the resurrection!
And He’s comin’ back,
He’s comin’ back again!
He’s comin’ back again!
We believe!
We believe

This Is Amazing Grace by Phil Wickham

Today’s Strong Worship Song is This Is Amazing Grace by Phil Wickham with help from Josh Farro and Jeremy Riddle. This song appears on the album The Ascension which was released in September 2013. This Is Amazing Grace meets all of my criteria of a strong worship song. Believers, who are God’s adopted children through faith in Christ are singing in response to God’s amazing grace to save.  In the lyrics Jesus emerges as the hero who alone rescues us by breaking us free from our sins and spiritual darkness. He did this by being our perfect substitute and bearing our cross which resulted in His death.  Jesus who is none other than the King of kings and King of glory has conquered death and is worthy of our songs of praise.

Scripture references include 2 Corinthians 6:18, Revelation 5:11-13, Revelation 17:14, Revelation 19:16, Psalm 24:8-10, Psalm 36:5-7, Exodus 15:13, 1 John 2:2, and John 18:37.

This Amazing Grace

Who breaks the power of sin and darkness
Whose love is mighty and so much stronger
The King of glory, the King above all Kings

Who shakes the whole earth with holy thunder
Leaves us breathless in awe and wonder
The King of glory, the King above all Kings

This is amazing grace
This is unfailing love
That You would take my place
That You would bear my cross
You laid down Your life
That I would be set free
Jesus I sing for all that You’ve done for me

Who brings our chaos back into order
Who makes the orphan a son and daughter
The King of glory, the King of glory

Who rules the nations with truth and justice
Shines like the sun in all of its brilliance
The king of glory, the King above all Kings

Worthy is the lamb who was slain
Worthy is the King who conquered the grave

Man of Sorrows by Hillsong United

Today’s strong worship song is Man of Sorrows by Hillsong United which was released on their Glorious Ruins album in July of 2013. The lyrics and the title are based on Isaiah 53 where God through Isaiah prophesied that the Messiah would be “a man of sorrows, familiar with suffering.” This song reads and sings like a hymn. The lyrics accurately and powerfully connect Isaiah 53 to the passion accounts in the four Gospels where Jesus suffers and dies on the cross for the sins of the world. The lyrics focus on Christ and His work of atonement, redemption and reconciliation. He indeed reconciled the very ones who nailed him to the cross. He has done the same for us! The lyrics end with the empty tomb the proclamation of the resurrection of Jesus. “Hallelujah God be praised. He’s risen from the grave.” Lyrics do not get much stronger than this.

Scripture references include Isaiah 53, John 3:16, 1 John 2:2, 2 Corinthians 5:19, and John 8:36.

Man of sorrows Lamb of God
By His own betrayed
The sin of man and wrath of God
Has been on Jesus laid
Silent as He stood accused
Beaten mocked and scorned
Bowing to the Father’s will
He took a crown of thorns
Oh that rugged cross
My salvation
Where Your love poured out over me
Now my soul cries out
Hallelujah
Praise and honour unto Thee

Sent of heaven God’s own Son
To purchase and redeem
And reconcile the very ones
Who nailed Him to that tree

Now my debt is paid
It is paid in full
By the precious blood
That my Jesus spilled

Now the curse of sin
Has no hold on me
Whom the Son sets free
Oh is free indeed

See the stone is rolled away
Behold the empty tomb
Hallelujah God be praised
He’s risen from the grave

Promises by Sanctus Real

Today’s strong worship song is the new song Promises by the group Sanctus Real. It is so new that it hasn’t been released yet. The official release date is October 9, 2012. The writers of this song are Matt Hammitt, Chris Rohman, Mark Graalman and Pete Provost. I like this song because it is both real life and real comfort for those living in real life. In this broken world real life means facing unexpected trouble.  In the midst of trouble we may not know what to pray or where to go. The lyrics point us in the right direction, to the Word of God and to the promises of God.

The sound quality on the YouTube video is not the greatest. I will update this post when clearer ones are available.

Scripture references include Romans 10:17, John 17:17, Romans 8:28, Jeremiah 31:3, Romans 3:3, Hebrews 11:1, Romans 8:38-39, and Psalm 145:13.

Sometimes it’s hard to keep believing In what you can’t see
That everything happens for a reason
Even the worst life brings
If you’re reaching for an answer
And you don’t know what to pray
Just open up the pages Let His word be your strength
And hold on to the promises (Hold tight)
Hold on to the promises (Alright)
Jesus is alive so hold tight Hold on to the promises
All things work for the good Of those who love God
He holds back nothing that will heal you
Not even His own Son
His love is everlasting
His faithfulness unending
Oh, if God is for us who can be against us
So if you feel weak Neither life, nor death
Could separate us From the eternal love
Of our God who saves us

Savior of the World by Ben Cantelon and sung by the Newsboys

Today’s strong worship song is Savior of the World by the Newsboys. This song was featured on the God’s Not Dead album that came out at the end of 2011. The song was written by Ben Cantelon in 2010. The Newsboys have been around a long time, have a familiar sound, and are loved by many. The lyrics are strong on several levels. The song is didactic in teaching the passion of Christ. It is gospel centered. Death has been defeated and Christ has overcome the darkness  for us. He is our Messiah and worthy of all praise.

Initially, I hesitated with this song because of one little word “a”. The songs says “For He made us a way.” Normally we think of Jesus words in John 14:6 in which He says “I am the way…no one comes to the Father except through me.” The word “the” is an important one in John 14:6 in that it is exclusive. Jesus is the only way not just one of many ways. It was pointed out to me, recently, however that in Isaiah 43:16 God says “See, I am doing a new thing! Now it springs up; do you not perceive it? I am making a way in the wilderness…”  In others words, the lyrics are still Biblical in saying that Jesus provided us a way out of our sin and shame.

Scripture references include Isaiah 53:12, 1 Peter 2:24, John 19:30, 1 Corinthians 15 :54, 2 Timothy 1:10, John 3:16, Isaiah 43:16,

Savior of the Word

God so loved, that He gave His son
To lay down His life for the sake of us
He bore the weight of our sin and shame
With a cry He said, It is finished

Christ the Lord overcame the darkness
He’s alive: death has been defeated

For He made us a way
by which we have been saved
He’s the Savior of the world
So we lift up a shout for his fame and renown
Praise the Lord
Praise the Lord
Jesus, Savior of the world

We must spread the word of His soon return
To reclaim the world for His glory
Let the church now sing of this coming King
Crowned with majesty, our Redeemer

And He reigns, ruler of the heavens
And His name is Jesus, the Messiah

Christ the Lord overcame the darkness
He’s alive: death has been defeated
And He reigns, ruler of the heavens
And His name is Jesus, the Messiah

Mighty to Save by Hillsong United

Today’s strong worship song is Mighty to Save which was first sung and made popular in 2005 by Hillsong United. The words and music were written by Ben Fielding and Reuben Morgan. In 2009 Laura Story’s version won a Dove Award. Several other Christians artists and groups sing this song including Michael W. Smith, Seventh Day Slumber, Rock Of Ages, Reuben Morgan, Jeremy Camp, and the Newsboys.

Scripture references include:1 Corinthians 15:54, Zephaniah 3:17,Ephesians 5:13-14,and Isaiah 60:1-3

Mighty to Save

Everyone needs compassion
A love that’s never failing
Let mercy fall on me

Everyone needs forgiveness
The kindness of a Savior
The hope of nations

(Chorus:)
Savior
He can move the mountains
My God is mighty to save
He is mighty to save
Forever
Author of Salvation
He rose and conquered the grave
Jesus conquered the grave

So take me as You find me
All my fears & failures
Fill my life again

I give my life to follow
Everything I believe in
Now I surrender

Savior
He can move the mountains
My God is mighty to save
He is mighty to save

Forever
Author of Salvation
He rose and conquered the grave

Jesus conquered the grave

Shine Your light and
Let the whole world see

We’re singing
For the glory
Of the risen King

Jesus
(Chorus:)
